Puppies Coexistence
According to most experts, the presence of a dog is very useful for the development of children, for several reasons:
- The child learns to be responsible for another living being, to look after him and include the existence of rules.
- The child has a playmate and confidences.
- The dog is an escape valve for the excesses of sentimental child, his need for affection.
- The two get to know each other's limits and not beyond it. The child learns social behavior.
But the dog can also represent a danger to the child, especially if the animal is not handled correctly at the beginning of this coexistence.
Unfortunately in the literature are reported several cases of bites to children, and several investigations have found that children under 4 years of age are the most frequent victims of aggression with very serious consequences.
In most cases the dogs are owned by the parents themselves.
These findings indicate the absolute need to always supervise your dog when you have a small child.
Of course, there are many cases of dogs and children live together on a complete and balanced.
Before proceeding, however, I must have a premise: not all dogs are able to live with children.
The puppy that has been used since the early months of life in contact with children will be able to recognize them as such and to interact with them. But there are dogs who, having never seen a child, having demonstrated their aggressive behavior.
The child, especially if small, makes sounds and makes unusual movements, which can be interpreted in a manner not suitable for a dog not properly socialized. A child running, for example, could be identified with a prey to chase and capture.
When a dog has shown such behavior, when it is aggressive with the owners, as his hierarchical position is unclear and, anyway, when he never had a chance to meet children, it is always good to consult an expert on dog behavior problems , which can certainly tell you if the dog is suitable or not to live with a child at home.
The most common behavioral problem in respect of a newborn child is that of jealousy.
But if this jealousy is controlled from the outset, and see how the partnership between child and dog can become free from danger.
Some dogs react continually interposing between owners and children, some crying and barking to attract attention, or skip to separate the child from the parents.
If we understand why a dog gets jealous, then we can avoid this problem.
The dog, in fact, generally feel jealousy because with the arrival of the child, suddenly, all the attention will move on him, and the dog feels neglected and abandoned.
One thing that happens very often, understand, is that only when the baby is asleep or not home, the owners, who have a break, back to interact with the dog.
Only when the child is not the dog gets attention. In this way, however, the dog learns to connect the presence of the child to the fact that the owners do not interact with him, so the baby represents something negative, a free-kick.
Another aspect that should not be underestimated is that the dog can also suffer a lot of change in habits, the presence of new objects in the house and new smells.
WHAT TO DO ... THEN
BEFORE ARRIVING IN THE HOUSE OF CHILD
1. Before the arrival of the home child, the owners must begin to accustom the dog to receive less attention.
In this way the dog can not connect the arrival of the baby with the diminished. In general, if the owners envisage a change in lifestyle, you should anticipate them and not start so sudden arrival of the child.
2. It 'proved very useful to bring clothes home from the hospital the baby and mother to make them smell the dog, the dog just to get used to new smells.
3. Owners can start doing normal operations (changing diapers, giving milk, having a bath) by using a doll. If the dog proves to be calm, reward him.
ARRIVAL AT HOME CHILD
4. Let the dog approach the child to smell it and know it. The dog must learn to understand what it is. Owners must control it, but should not prevent that there is this curiosity.
should not send him away, nor punish him when he approaches the child, unless there are real dangers.
5. Especially at the beginning, be present and to reward the correct behavior (if the dog approaches and is quiet: tidbit ...)
6. If, however, behaves too rough, better distract him with a treat or a game, but do not punish him.
7. The most important thing is that the child represents to the dog something positive.
So when the child is present, try to give as much attention to the dog, drop bits of food, pet it, talk and play with him. But when the child is not there, the owners will give less attention to the dog. In this way the presence of the child is associated with the prize, the experience positive interaction.
MORE CHILDREN 'BIG
8. When the child is older, it is good to share with him the food, leaving for example, that the dog lick the remains of the jar of baby food or giving of treats to the dog.
In this way, the dog connects the baby to the premium, that is the food.
9. Parents should teach children to respect the needs of the dog, for example, not to disturb him when he sleeps.
If the child is too young, but he starts to crawl or walk the dog house should be positioned so that when the dog buried the child can not reach it.
10. Children should be kept under control to protect your pet, so that it can become, even if unintentionally, the victim of teasing and abuse.
11. The child must be used to ask the dog to run some commands. Would be advisable, before giving him a treat, he did always sit.
In this way the dog will understand that the child has a hierarchical position higher than his, and must obey and respect it.
12. Often children who live with dogs in the house, tend to have absolute trust in respect of the dogs also do not know.
This can be dangerous. We must teach children (all, not just those who live with dogs) the correct way to approach the dogs always ask, keep calm, caressing them in the nose and not on the head, do not make sudden movements and sudden.
13. We must teach children how to avoid dog bites: motionless, squat, not stare into my eyes and do not shout.
Children should know that the movements too quickly, before a dog run free and the shouting can cause, unwittingly, a dog.
